Personyze adds the full toolkit to any Joomla template — targeted banners and popups, recommendations, dynamic content, and A/B testing. Install the plugin — or paste the snippet yourself — and it runs client-side, with a client-side JSON API for delivery and a server REST API for advanced, server-to-server data sync.

The official plugin

Personalization on Joomla, without touching your template

Adding a personalization platform to a Joomla site usually means editing a template override, or filing a ticket with whoever built the site. The official Joomla personalization plugin removes that step: install it, enter your Personyze account ID, enable it, and the tag is live on every page. It stays live through template changes and Joomla updates, because it is no longer part of your template.

Install and configure

  1. Get the plugin. It is in the Joomla Extensions Directory as Personyze for Joomla — or take the latest plg_system_personyze zip from the releases page.
  2. Upload it. System → Install → Extensions, and drop the zip in.
  3. Open the plugin. System → Plugins, search for Personyze, and open the Personyze system plugin.
  4. Enter your account ID, set Status to Enabled, and save. The ID is the number in your Personyze snippet, under Settings → Tracking Code. The tag is live on the next page load.

The Joomla Extensions Directory lists it as Personyze for Joomla; once installed, Joomla shows it as Personyze Personalization for Joomla. Requires Joomla 4 or 5 and PHP 8.1 or newer. The plugin registers a Joomla update site when it installs, so new versions appear under System → Update → Extensions like any other extension. There is a second field, Tracking domains; leave it empty unless support gives you a value for it.

What the plugin does, and what it does not

  • Adds the Personyze tag to every front-end page, from the plugin’s own settings.
  • Adds it the way Joomla expects — through the document API on onBeforeCompileHead, not by string-replacing rendered HTML.
  • Never loads in the administrator, so your own editors’ clicks are not counted as site traffic.
  • Outputs nothing until an ID is set, or while the plugin is disabled.
  • Does not add Joomla modules, and does not expose Joomla articles as a recommendation feed. Both are planned, neither is in this release.

Those last two are not how personalization reaches the page. Banners, recommendations, dynamic text and A/B tests are rendered by Personyze on the page itself — the plugin’s job is to put the tag there, and everything below works once it has.

Common questions

How do I add Personyze to Joomla?
Install the official plugin, Personyze for Joomla, from the Joomla Extensions Directory — or download plg_system_personyze from the releases page — upload it at System → Install → Extensions, then open the Personyze system plugin under System → Plugins, paste your account ID and set Status to Enabled. The tag is live on the next page load, on every front-end page, and survives template changes. If you would rather not install an extension, you can still paste the snippet high in the <head> of your template’s index.php.
What can I personalize?

Is it no-code?
Yes. Build campaigns in a visual editor; the tracking snippet and client-side JSON API render everything without back-end work. A server-to-server REST API is available for headless or advanced data sync.
Does it slow down my site?
No. Place the snippet high in the <head> so personalization runs on first paint, avoiding a flash of original content.
Which Joomla versions does the plugin support?
Joomla 4 and Joomla 5, on PHP 8.1 or newer. Joomla 3 is end of life and is not supported; on a Joomla 3 site, paste the Personyze snippet into your template instead — everything on this page works the same way once the tag is on the site.
Does the plugin add Joomla modules or an article feed?
Not in this release. It adds the Personyze tag; Joomla modules and an article recommendation feed are planned. Neither is needed for what this page describes: Personyze renders banners, recommendations and tests on the page itself, wherever you place them.
